Clonazepam
Other
In plain English
Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine used for certain seizures and panic disorder, and off-label for problems like restless legs or REM sleep behavior disorder. It calms overactive nerve signaling. It is a controlled substance because it can be habit-forming, so it is used carefully, usually short-term, and should not be stopped abruptly.
The science
Clonazepam is a high-potency, long-acting benzodiazepine that acts as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA-A receptors, increasing chloride-channel opening frequency to hyperpolarize neurons and reduce excitability; it has anticonvulsant and anxiolytic effects and is FDA-approved for seizure and panic disorders.
