Multivitamin & Amino-Acid IV Blends (Myers-type)

Also known as: Myers' cocktail, IV micronutrient therapy, amino-acid IV blends, GACLIV / Amino-B / B-Amino

IM / IV / SQ Therapy

In plain English

These are intravenous or injectable blends of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids (the classic version is the "Myers' cocktail": magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C). They are marketed for energy, wellness, immune support, and recovery. They are generally safe when properly prepared, but the best controlled study did not show benefit over placebo, so the popular wellness claims are not well supported. Correcting a true nutrient deficiency is a different, valid use.

The science

IV micronutrient therapy delivers water-soluble vitamins, minerals and (in some blends) amino acids directly into the bloodstream, bypassing gut absorption. The rationale is repletion and higher transient serum levels, but the pivotal randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the Myers' cocktail for fibromyalgia found no statistically significant benefit over placebo (both groups improved), while confirming safety and feasibility (Ali et al., J Altern Complement Med 2009). Outside documented deficiency states, evidence for IV vitamin/amino-acid blends improving energy, immunity or wellness is weak. These are compounded and not FDA-approved for wellness indications; risks include infection, fluid/electrolyte disturbance, and caution with high-dose vitamin C in G6PD deficiency or renal impairment.
