Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Hair RestoreDermatology
In plain English
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 widely used in skincare. It strengthens the skin barrier, calms redness and inflammation, helps with acne and rosacea, and can lighten dark spots. It is gentle, well tolerated, and pairs well with most other ingredients, which is why it appears in many combination creams.
The science
Niacinamide is a precursor of NAD+/NADPH and modulates cellular energy, DNA repair, and inflammation (in part via inhibition of PARP-1 and NF-kappaB signaling). Topically it stimulates ceramide, free fatty acid, and cholesterol synthesis and structural proteins (filaggrin, involucrin) to improve the permeability barrier, reduces transepidermal water loss, decreases sebum, has anti-inflammatory effects useful in acne and rosacea, and inhibits melanosome transfer to reduce hyperpigmentation.
