Topical NSAIDs (Diclofenac, Ketoprofen) & Injectable Ketorolac
DermatologyOther
In plain English
These are anti-inflammatory pain relievers. Diclofenac and ketoprofen are rubbed onto painful joints or muscles (for example, arthritic knees) and relieve pain with much less stomach and body-wide risk than pills. They appear in compounded pain creams. Ketorolac is a strong injectable NSAID for short-term pain. NSAIDs still carry heart, kidney, and stomach cautions, especially with prolonged or high-dose use.
The science
NSAIDs inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX-1/COX-2), reducing prostaglandin-mediated pain and inflammation. A Cochrane review found topical diclofenac and ketoprofen significantly better than vehicle for chronic musculoskeletal (mainly knee osteoarthritis) pain, with about 60% of users achieving substantial relief and low systemic exposure. Ketorolac is a potent parenteral NSAID for short-term moderate-to-severe pain.
